Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba

All-inclusive Cuban vacations here offer you the chance to get ahead of the crowd.

Tourism is just getting start on this cay, the last of a long parade of tiny isles sprinkled across the Bahia de Buena Vista off Che Guevera’s home province of Villa Clara. There’s a magnificent monument to Cuba’s revolutionary hero located in the provincial capital of Santa Clara, which many visitors take the time to see.

The seaward side of the cays is girded with gorgeous beaches that the Cubans plan to develop but right now there are only two resorts – both operated by the Melia chain – and the Barco San Pasqual, a freighter turned hotel off Cayo Frances that caters to scuba divers.

The soft white-sand beach is gorgeous -- you can walk for seven kilometres, but the water can be a little rough and windy at certain times of the year. There is also a clothes-optional beach close to the Sol Cayo Santa Maria.

The cays are linked to the Cuban mainland by a raised 50-kilomere causeway and the drive from Santa Clara takes about 11/4 hours.

It can be a dandy destination if a beach holiday is what you want but most of fun is limited to the resorts. No Cubans live on the islands and the only locals you’ll meet are the ones working at your hotel.
